Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)
-
BJJ is a martial art and combat sport focused on grappling and ground fighting. It emphasizes using leverage, technique, and timing rather than brute strength, allowing a smaller person to successfully defend against and control a larger adversary using submissions (chokes and joint locks).
-
Absolutely not! One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be fit to train martial arts. BJJ is excellent functional conditioning, and the best way to get in shape for Jiu-Jitsu is simply by doing Jiu-Jitsu. You can pace yourself and take breaks whenever needed during class.
-
If you are attending a Gi class, we can provide a loaner uniform if available, or you can wear comfortable, form-fitting athletic wear like a T-shirt and gym shorts (no zippers, pockets, or buttons). For No-Gi classes, a standard rash guard or athletic shirt combined with board shorts or compression leggings is ideal.
Training & Class Etiquette -
Gi training involves wearing the traditional heavy cotton martial arts uniform, which allows you to grip your opponent's clothing to control them or apply submissions. No-Gi training is done in shorts and a rash guard, relying on body hooks, wrist control, and momentum because clothing grips are prohibited. Both styles complement each other perfectly.
-
Safety is our absolute highest priority. While martial arts carry an inherent risk of minor bumps and bruises, our classes are heavily supervised by experienced instructors. We foster a cooperative learning environment where students learn to "tap out" early to prevent submission injuries.
-
Tapping out is the universal signal in grappling to stop the action. If you are caught in a submission or feel uncomfortable, you firmly tap your opponent, tap the mat, or say "tap" verbally. Your partner will immediately release the hold. It ensures everyone can train safely and return to work or school the next day.
